This Emperor Penguin was painted in 1995. I have a great love for penguins, and this is the largest of the species and rarely kept in captivity as they as true sub-Antarctic animals, needing the extreme environment to survive. They are also huge by comparison to the penguins commonly seen in captivity, such as Humboldts and Rockhoppers.
I'm also fascinated by the colours in snow when the sun shines across it, something that I have studied many times and aspire to capture in each of my winter paintings. The shadows are often blue, with yellows, pinks and oranges contrasting, in various hues.
My original painting of the emperor penguin is painted in acrylic on a canvas panel. It is varnished but unframed. Size: 10" x 14" / 25.4cm x 35.6cm
