This painting captures a moment at Chester Zoo in Cheshire some years back when we visited. We spotted a heron paying the penguins a visit, I expect it's something that happens quite often with the free fish available! The penguins here are Humboldts which are native to South America, on the Pacific coasts of Peru and Chile. The Grey Heron is a very characterful and elegant bird that is seen all over the UK, and is also widespread in parts of Europe, Asia and Africa. Chester Zoo has been educating and entertaining visitors since 1931 and is one of the UK's most popular zoos, engaged in many different conservation and education programmes.
As a lot of my work for the Mouth and Foot Painting Artists is aimed at the Christmas market, I added snow to give it a Christmassy feel. It was painted in January 1997.
It is painted with acrylic on a canvas panel. It is varnished but unframed. Size: 14" x 10" / 35.6cm x 254mm
